How Generic Vantin Works

Cefpodoxime proxetil is a prodrug that is converted in the body to its active form, cefpodoxime, after oral absorption. The active drug works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, binding to penicillin-binding proteins and weakening the bacterial cell wall, which leads to bacterial death.

It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, making it useful for infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, ears, and sinuses. Vantin treats bacterial infections only and does not work against viral illnesses such as colds or influenza.
