How Generic Zocor Works

Generic Zocor contains simvastatin, a lipid-lowering agent belonging to the statin class. After oral administration, simvastatin is converted in the liver to its active β-hydroxyacid form, which selectively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme involved in cholesterol biosynthesis. This inhibition leads to a decrease in hepatic cholesterol production, prompting the liver to increase the expression of LDL receptors on hepatocyte surfaces.

As a result of increased LDL receptor activity, more LDL cholesterol is removed from the bloodstream, leading to significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL levels. Lower circulating LDL reduces plaque formation within arteries, slowing the progression of atherosclerosis and decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Consistent, long-term use of Zocor combined with lifestyle modifications provides optimal cardiovascular protection, while regular monitoring helps minimize muscle and liver-related side effects.
