How Generic Zyloprim Works

After oral administration, allopurinol is converted into its active metabolite oxypurinol, which inhibits xanthine oxidase. This decreases the formation of uric acid in the liver.

With lower uric acid levels, the formation of urate crystals in joints and tissues is reduced. Over time, this helps prevent gout attacks and promotes dissolution of existing crystals.
