How Generic Sinemet Works

After oral administration, levodopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine in the central nervous system. This helps replenish the deficient dopamine levels seen in Parkinson’s disease.

Carbidopa does not cross the blood-brain barrier and works peripherally by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down levodopa. This increases the amount of levodopa reaching the brain and reduces peripheral side effects like nausea.
